DescriptionPhiladelphia District Attorney Lynne M. Abraham, known as the "tough cookie" for her blunt style, defeated former assistant prosecutor Seth Williams yesterday in the city's Democratic primary.

Abraham - already the city's longest-serving district attorney in eight decades - had a substantial lead with nearly all of the votes counted, according to unofficial returns.

"No one could be more privileged to lead a great office than I am," Abraham said, praising her staff as the "best and the brightest" during a victory celebration at the Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel.

"We're working to keep this city safe and strong," she said.

Coining a food image of her own during the campaign, Abraham had branded Williams a "souffle," saying he lacked substance. But Williams, 38, drove the debate with a message that Abraham's management lay behind the high rate of dismissal of felony arrests in court.

"My soul is rested," Williams said, telling supporters to "stay tuned" for his next run for district attorney. "We ran a campaign based on the issues, not mud-slinging or race-baiting."
