Description | Former Gov. Evan Mecham is receiving long-term care at a Phoenix veterans facility for symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer's disease.
Mecham, 80, was placed in the Arizona State Veteran Home earlier this year, his son, Dennis Mecham, confirmed Tuesday.
The former governor is suffering from a form of dementia. His son said "there is no clear diagnosis."
The family had hoped to keep Mecham's condition private, but his son agreed to discuss the matter to clarify reports suggesting the former governor was near death.
"He is not in great health, but nothing is imminent," his son said. "His health is really quite good for his condition."
