Description | A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted state Sen. Johnny Ray Turner and two other people on mail fraud and conspiracy charges relating to the eastern Kentucky senator's 2000 campaign.
Turner is the Senate's second-ranking Democrat as caucus chairman. His attorney, Brent L. Caldwell, previously said he expected Turner to be indicted and that he would not resign his Senate seat.
"I feel very strongly he ran a clean election," Caldwell said Thursday. "We think we have a very strong case."
Two others indicted with Turner, Ross Harris and Loren Glenn Turner, were convicted of similar charges in a separate case.
Gregory F. Van Tatenhove, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, disputed any notion that his office was targeting Democrats.
"This is not a case that has politics connected to it in any way," Van Tatenhove said. |
