The entrance of Deval Patrick into the race for governor means Reilly now faces one of a politician's toughest challenges: the second look.

A recap and analysis of the week in state government.

Tom Reilly was busy last week, and doubtless not too happy, as he coped with the new normal in the Democratic race for governor. From frontrunner and beneficiary of a sense of inevitability, Reilly now finds himself confronted by a sense of uncertainty and new possibility in the party. The entrance of Deval Patrick into the race for governor means Reilly now faces one of a politician's toughest challenges: the second look. Meanwhile, Patrick's full-time vocation is creating first impressions, and that always generates the kind of glow currently attendant on his effort.

And by the way, there is no Reilly for Governor web site, yet, though everyone assumes there will be. There is an official attorney general's site, with a big photo of Reilly grinning warmly, and led last week by a headline on his efforts to battle not crime, but the high cost of energy.

Reality was no doubt settling in at Patrick headquarters and the sting was eased a bit by an influx of donations including $500 from former Urban League chief Vernon Jordan, one of President Clinton's close friends. That may auger a Clinton Connection to the fundraising arm of the Patrick effort, and the Clinton people were and are extremely good at raising money.

There is a Deval Patrick for Governor site, by the way, and it looks nice, probably enhancing the sense of both trepidation and determination within the AG's circle of adherents. One look at that Web site and they know this is serious stuff - and they really have to earn the nomination now, in a way they didn't before. But they believe they can do it, and the Reilly and Patrick recent appearances at the Kennedy School showed how. With the governor on the right, and Patrick on the left
