DescriptionWhile you're looking at all that's wrong with Kentucky's Democratic Party, take a gander at the 44-year-old Mongiardo and his 19-year-old girlfriend (for the math-impaired among you, that's a gap of 25 years, so he may be as old as her father). Such a May-December romance will take your mind right off actors Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, who have only a 15-year age difference.

No, the Mongiardo-teen romance can be more closely compared to that of actor Charlie Chaplin, who at 54 married 18-year-old Oona O'Neill, causing lifetime estrangement with her dad, playwright Eugene O'Neill. Parents can be so pesky.

Such behavior is guaranteed to irk family-centric voters. Specifically, those of us who have teenage daughters may speculate on what kind of reception Dr. Dan would get in our homes if introduced as the new "boyfriend." The only question is whether the court would have mercy on us.

In my book, Mongiardo tossed much of the credibility he earned in last year's Senate race into the diaper bin in taking up with a 19-year-old. This is the kind of "what was he thinking?" moment that may just end his political career among voters who aren't in the throes of their own second youth. Voters are not kind to politicians in midlife crisis, and Kentucky's Democrats have enough problems simply fielding candidates who aren't Republican Lite.

Rather than plead an error of judgment for dating a teenager, Mongiardo chose to whine about his misunderstood personal life. Does he mean that Kentuckians should be relieved that he is not gay, as Republican rumormongers implied during his U.S. Senate race, but is instead a cradle robber?
