DescriptionDemocratic state Sen. Daniel Mongiardo still owes more than $120,000 to former campaign staff members and various political advertising firms from his 2004 U.S. Senate run, according to recent federal finance reports.

Overall, Mongiardo, a physician from Hazard, has reported more than $650,000 in debt, but most of that is left over from the $706,000 in loans he made from his personal accounts.

By law, he can recoup only up to $250,000 of personal donations per election. His campaign has repaid $179,317 to Mongiardo already, the April 15 reports with the Federal Election Commission show.

Mongiardo, who narrowly lost to the incumbent Republican Sen. Jim Bunning in November, said yesterday he still is deciding how to raise more money to cover the other outstanding debts.
