Description | State officials have ordered that ballots cast in this month's close state Senate election be recounted by hand next week.
Former legislator Bill Alter won the April 5 election and was sworn in last week as the first Republican in nearly half a century to represent northern Jefferson County in the state Senate. Alter narrowly defeated Rep. Rick Johnson, D-High Ridge, in the four-way race to succeed Steve Stoll, who left the Senate this year to become city administrator of Festus.
According to a ballot count certified by state officials, Alter edged out Johnson, the Democratic nominee, by just 68 votes - less than one-third of one percent of ballots cast. Though Johnson's campaign has requested a recount, it is unclear whether Johnson's campaign insisted on a hand recount. |
