Description | VANCOUVER — Olympic gold medalist Daniel Igali is quick to shrug off the political rookie label, saying he got his first taste of politics at 13, during his father's campaign for the Nigerian People's Party in the late 1980s.
"I saw the excitement of politics, what you can do, how you can influence people," said Igali, who won gold at the Sydney Games in 2000.
While Igali's father lost his political bid, Igali is hoping to win a seat as a Liberal MLA on May 17.
The B.C. Liberals are counting on the star power of Igali, former B.C. Appeal Court judge Wally Oppal and former CBC chairwoman Carol Taylor to woo voters while the NDP says its lineup represents everyday people the electorate can identify with. The Liberals big names came aboard the party as it was losing a number of high-profile cabinet ministers who got out of politics for personal reasons. |
