Description | "WASHINGTON -- As three New Jersey congressmen maneuver to become the front-runner for a possible U.S. Senate vacancy next year, Rep. Robert Menendez is outpacing his potential rivals in one key area -- fund-raising.
The latest campaign finance reports show Menendez (D-13th Dist.) raised about $1 million in the first three months of the year, giving him a total of $2.57 million in his congressional campaign war chest as of March 31. Funds in House campaign accounts can be used in Senate races.
That total includes some but not all of the proceeds from a major fund-raising event held earlier this month at the Meadowlands featuring Hall of Fame baseball player Willie Mays. When all the checks come in from that event, it could push the Hudson County congressman's campaign total to well over $3 million."
