DescriptionColumbus Public School Board of Education candidates

Barbara Bryson and Al Warner are two of the seven candidates for the Columbus Public Schools Board of Education who will be on the May 3 primary election ballot. Two more candidates will be profiled next week and three candidates on April 24. The others are Bill Buckel, Betty Drummond, Andrew Ginther, W. Carlton Weddington and Micheal D. Wiles. The six who receive the most votes will go on to the November general election, competing for three open board seats.

Columbus Public Schools Board of Education candidate Barbara Bryson has seen both sides of education. Her daughter "has just soared" through Eastmoor Academy; she will graduate this spring and go on to college next year. On the flip side, her son struggled through high school with learning disabilities that were slow to be identified.

"I've seen children who have received the level of education they need and those who haven't," Bryson said.

A friend of hers, whose son attends a district other than CPS, has a learning disability.

"It took two years to get an IEP (individual education plan) written," she said. "His teachers finally said, 'Oh, maybe we need to do something.'"
