DescriptionDave Friend asked for more support from Nebraska Republicans after Omaha's primary, and that's what he received Monday from GOP officeholders.

They brought praise but no checkbooks to help Friend challenge Mayor Mike Fahey in the May 10 general election.

After Fahey bested Friend in the primary by 20 percentage points, Friend said: "I relied on the party. Frankly, they could have done a better job."

The Fahey campaign shrugged off the Republican unity display by pointing to the broad-based primary support for Fahey, a Democrat, in both Republican and Democratic areas of the city.

"There is really no Republican or Democratic way to fight a fire or fix a pothole," said Fahey campaign spokeswoman Tess Fogarty.

Ten elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Lee Terry and Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, stood behind Friend and praised him at the Omaha police union hall, where Friend has his headquarters.

Gov. Dave Heineman and U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel offered some long-distance praise.
