Description | CINCINNATI (AP) -- Former state Rep. Jean Schmidt is the third Republican to enter the race to succeed Rep. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who is awaiting Senate confirmation of his nomination as U.S. trade representative.
Schmidt, 53, of Miami Township east of Cincinnati, represented Clermont County in the Ohio House for four years. She announced her candidacy on Monday.
Other GOP candidates seeking the 2nd District seat are Hamilton County Commissioner Pat DeWine, 37, the son of Sen. Mike DeWine, and state Rep. Tom Brinkman, 47, of Cincinnati.
Schmidt was a Miami Township trustee for 11 years before serving two terms as a state representative. She gave up her House seat last year to run for the Ohio Senate, but lost to Tom Niehaus in the GOP primary.
