DescriptionDemocrats are hammering Montana Republican Sen. Conrad Burns over his ties to a Washington lobbyist accused of cheating American Indian tribes out of millions of dollars.

The Montana Democratic Party this week called on Burns to return campaign contributions he received from wealthy casino tribes when they were clients of lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his business associate, Michael Scanlon. Federal disclosure reports show that Burns received $150,090 from six tribes when the two men represented them from 2000 to 2004....

The Montana Democrats' demand comes on the heels of their request earlier this month that the Senate Select Committee on Ethics investigate whether Burns violated ethics rules by using his influence to help get one of the tribes — Michigan's Saginaw Chippewas — a $3 million federal school construction grant in 2003....

Shortly after Congress awarded the grant, Burns' former chief of staff, Will Brooke, went to work for Abramoff.
