Description | Ever since the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, the Democratic party has been unflinchingly pro-choice. Those in the pro-life camp were marginalized and frequently denigrated. In the months since the election, though, some major party leaders and power brokers have begun speaking out about abortion in surprising and uncharacteristic ways. Such prominent pro-abortion Democrats as Hillary Rodham Clinton, Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi and Charles Schumer have made strong public comments reaching out to pro-lifers.
-------------
The recent pro-life-friendly statements by national Democratic leaders may be the most significant development in this area in three decades. They portend that the party may indeed return to its earlier principle of inclusiveness whereby divergent groups and viewpoints were welcome under the big tent. Here in Missouri, the evidence to date is that "common ground" developments are not mere posturing but represent a new political reality that can lead to legislative alternatives that will reduce the number of abortions in the state. |
