An excerpt...
"Forget about the governor’s race, there’s a United States Senate contest brewing.

As the seven Democratic members of the state’s House delegation trip over one another in anticipation of a potential Senate opening next January, one big-name Republican is taking a very public step towards a candidacy, secure in the knowledge that no matter what happens this November the GOP nomination will be open.

State Sen. Thomas H. Kean Jr. (R-Westfield), the son of former Governor Tom Kean., is making calls to Republicans informing them that he is opening a federal campaign account and will begin raising money for an ’06 Senate bid. He said the move is tantamount to an announcement of candidacy and cited the expensive nature of politics as the reason for his early start. The move also positions Kean to head-off other Republicans who might be interested in the seat.

Kean is walking something of a fine line, with state Republicans already facing uphill and under funded fights this fall.

“I’m starting the process of moving the ball forward, but this is a year when people should be talking about the gubernatorial and Assembly races,” he said.

None of New Jersey ’s six GOP congressmen, who would have to give up their safe House seats to run, have hinted at having an appetite for the Senate race.

“If someone else had an interest, someone probably would have said something by this point,” said Bill Palatucci, the state GOP’s finance chairman and a close friend of the Kean family.

Palatucci’s enthusiasm for Kean could indicate that U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie, Palatucci’s best friend and former law partner, will pass on a Senate run in ’06. Palatucci says not to read into that, though.

Without question, Kean’s biggest political asset is his lineage."
