DescriptionHe's being wooed by President Bush on his Social Security overhaul and is the only Democrat in the Senate who hasn't said no.

He's been known to break with his party on a number of big votes in Washington.

But that didn't stop U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson from receiving a standing ovation and cheer before more than 450 rank-and-file Democrats Saturday night.

Nelson talked like a Democrat, too, saying he was proud to be a member of the party that stands for education, economic security, the environment, public safety and working people - despite suggestions to the contrary.

"The other side has found a way to define us differently that how we define ourselves," Nelson told the Lancaster County Patriots' Dinner. "We believe in an education system where truly no child is left behind. We are a party of compassion for all the people, not just a few. . . . We are as patriotic as anyone on the other side would claim to be."

Nelson used his appearance before the annual Lancaster County fund-raising dinner to both affirm his standing among the Democratic faithful and also to define himself - in advance of a likely re-election bid next year - as a trusted independent "blue" voice in a "red" state.

In fact, Nelson said in an interview beforehand he doesn't consider Nebraska a red, or Republican, state at all, but one that seeks out strong independent voices from both parties.
