Description | Treasurer Bob Casey Jr. could decide by next week -- or sooner -- whether he will challenge U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., in 2006.
Casey is one of several Democrats exploring a run against Santorum, but polls and party leaders rank him as the strongest challenger.
Gov. Ed Rendell's communications director, Penny Lee, said, "the governor thinks Bob would be a great senator and candidate, very competitive."
Polls also have shown Casey leading Santorum and indicating his numbers have room to grow in several regions, including the southeast, which tends to favor Democrats.
Santorum has declined to comment, but Republican State Committee spokesman Josh Wilson said, "the Republican Party and Sen. Santorum are focused on his strong record and campaign, not on who his opponent may be. Certainly Bob Casey, should he be in the running, will be an opponent that brings experience to the table. But as a party, we're not scared of Bob Casey."
