DescriptionMonroe County Republicans are eyeing county Legislator Chris Wilmot as their likely candidate for Rochester mayor this year.

Wilmot, who switched from a Democrat to a Republican in December, is getting support from GOP boss Stephen Minarik.

"Chris is properly aligned on issues that are important to the city and has answers to address them," said Minarik, who runs the county and state Republican Party. "I only hope that he runs."

Wilmot, who represents part of the city, said he's made no final decision, but said, "I'm leaning more in that direction."

When the outspoken Wilmot switched parties, the speculation was that he was lining up a run for mayor, a job Wilmot had considered pursuing as a Democrat.
