DescriptionMobile Mayor Mike Dow, whose name has become synonymous with the city he has led for nearly 16 years, said Thursday that he will step aside from public office to spend more time with his family and return to the business world that made him a millionaire.

Dow, 57, is scheduled to officially announce this morning that he will not seek a fifth term, making public a decision that was widely expected. Elections are in August.

"I love the city and I love my job, and I feel a sense of responsibility," said Dow, in an hour-long interview Thursday with the Mobile Register. "I put the city ahead of my family, my friends and my personal life for a lot of years. And it's hard to think of not being there, backing away and doing some other things."
