Description | A former Montana governor who chaired George W. Bush's re-election campaign is emerging as a frontrunner among a pack of potential ambassadors to Canada.
Marc Racicot would be a high-profile appointment, should he be chosen to replace outgoing envoy Paul Cellucci. And he would be another ambassador who would be classed as a friend of the U.S. president and have his ear back home.
The White House has made no decision, although insiders say a list of successors has been pared to three, with Bush reportedly preferring someone with political acumen to an appointment from the business community.
Racicot is a former chair of the Republican National Committee and was Bush's personal envoy on the softwood lumber dispute. He is also knowledgeable on the most contentious bilateral file of the day, the U.S. restrictions on Canadian cattle and beef exports. |
