Description | Pritt is an American, and Appalachian, original, a coal miner's daughter and elementary-school teacher who, as a state senator in the 1980s, led battles for environmental protection, workers' rights, reproductive freedom, and a host of other progressive concerns. Four years ago, in a minimally funded campaign that mobilized hundreds of unpaid volunteers, Pritt almost unseated the incumbent governor, insurance executive and petty aristocrat Gaston Caperton, in the Democratic primary. This year, in that same primary, she holds a ten-point lead in polls over Joe Manchin, a coal baron, Christian fundamentalist, and leader of the state's regressive forces. Manchin has drawn on corporate contributions and his own fortune to outspend Pritt by a two-to-one margin, but has barely decreased her sizable advantage.
