Gov. Mike Huckabee and his wife, Janet, exchanged Valentine’s Day vows that they said will strengthen their 30-year bond and serve as an encouragement for other couples in Arkansas to establish what they now have: a "covenant marriage." Thousands of other couples then recited the same vows in the two-hour event that Huckabee has been promoting for weeks, finally using in his own marriage the covenant-marriage law he urged the Legislature to enact about four years ago.

After filing an affidavit with Pulaski County-Circuit Clerk Pat O’Brien in front of a crowd of 6,400 in Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, the Huckabees created the new legal status for their marriage that requires counseling and a two-year waiting period before divorce. Huckabee said if more people in Arkansas would do the same, the state’s high divorce rate might drop, saving families heartache and taxpayers money. He said he didn’t know how anyone could fault the idea, but outside the arena, protesters gathered.
