State of the City: 'Seattle is back,' mayor declares

| Description | Mayor Greg Nickels offered an upbeat view of how far Seattle has progressed during his three years in office when he delivered his annual State of the City address yesterday.
In a move that surprised City Council members, he also called for the hiring of 25 new police officers. Council members said they wondered why he didn't provide for additional police when he proposed his city budget just four months ago.
It was Nickels' fourth State of the City address. He is up for re-election this year, but so far no serious challengers have emerged.
Nickels hasn't struggled with the difficulties that plagued former Mayor Paul Schell, including WTO riots, terrorist threats, a violent Mardi Gras and an earthquake.
Instead, Nickels has faced an economic downturn that is only now rebounding. Since taking office, he cut the city budget more than $120 million. But Nickels was optimistic yesterday.
"Seattle is back," he said. "Things are much better for our city than they were three years ago, and they're going to get better yet." |
