Description | Performance rating best in two decades

Acting Gov. Richard Codey's regular-guy persona and his recent spat with a radio shock jock have propelled him to the highest job approval rating of any New Jersey governor in almost 20 years.
Seventy-six percent of registered voters approve of the way Codey is handling the job, according to the latest Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers Poll. The last time a New Jersey governor had such high ratings was in 1985, when 81 percent of the public approved of Gov. Tom Kean's job performance.
By comparison, Jim Florio's rating never climbed above 45 percent, Christie Whitman's never exceeded 56 percent and James E. McGreevey's never rose past 46 percent.
Perhaps more surprisingly, Codey, a Democrat, had better job approval ratings among Republicans (82 percent) and independents (76 percent) than among his own party, where 72 percent of Democratic voters gave him the thumbs up. |
