Description | Democrats are entitled to pick whomever they wish to fill the role of party spokesman. But if the role of a party leader includes being able to reach out to independents and, yes, even hated Republicans, it's hard to imagine Dean is the man for the job. He's a classic polarizing politician, certainly intelligent and committed, but disdainful of those who do not share his views and not the least bit inclined to hide his disdain.
Dean set the political world on fire in 2003. His campaign and the Deaniacs who ran it so inspired Democratic Party activists that many political pundits awarded him his party's nomination before the first primary vote was cast. But Dean's angry rhetoric wore very thin very quickly, even among Democarts, and he did not win a single primary.
He is certainly interesting and provocative, even entertaining in a demagogic kind of way. But Democrats need a leader who can persuade with sweet reason, not polarize with passionate rhetoric. |
