Description | Republican Gov. George V. Voinovich easily defeated his Democratic challenger, former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Mary Boyle, for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democratic senator and astronaut John Glenn.
When Glenn opted not to seek re-election, it gave the Republicans a big opportunity to capture his seat. Glenn showed weakness when he ran for re-election in 1992, capturing just 51 percent of the vote.
