Description | House Republicans on Wednesday chose Rep. Doc Hastings to be the next chairman of the House ethics committee as Speaker Dennis Hastert recast a panel caught up in controversy.
The House Republican caucus, consisting of all Republicans in the chamber, ratified Hastert's choice to replace Rep. Joel Hefley, R-Colo., as chairman of the committee which twice last year issued reports rebuking Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas.
The panel's actions regarding DeLay irritated several members of the GOP rank and file, who voiced criticism of Hefley at the time.
Hastings is a congressman from Washington state, and was next in seniority behind Hefley. Democrats have so far announced only that Alan Mollohan of West Virginia will return as the senior member of their party on the panel. |
