Description | WASHINGTON - Former state Rep. Gerald Willis parlayed his defection from the Democratic Party in 2002 into a job at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he has spent the last year traveling the country promoting rural development and conservation projects.
Willis, 65, of Piedmont, is special assistant to the chief of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and works in an office in Washington with pictures of President Bush and Vice President Cheney on the walls.
Willis rocked the political boat when, after finishing second in the Democratic primary for the 3rd Congressional District of east Alabama, he endorsed the Republican in the general election.
