DescriptionGov. Linda Lingle Tuesday tried to put the spotlight on one of her key legislative health proposals with a visit to a group of long-term patients.

She also met with the management council of the Hawaii Health Systems Corp. It's the first time a governor has done so.

"I think that the fact that you are the largest provider of nursing home beds in the state is an important factor for us," Lingle told the HHSC.

She is recommending that the Legislature provide the $41 million the corporation is asking for as part of its budget.

Afterward, the governor met with patients at the Maluhia Long-Term Care Health Center. It is one of the oldest and largest such facilities on Oahu. It is among the facilities the HHSC supervises on five islands. Maluhia has more than 800 beds.

This facility also provides day care for patients. The governor is pressing for full funding of the HHSC in part because she said it is often the provider of last resort for Hawaii's aging population.
