DescriptionST. PAUL - In yet another sign of bipartisan cooperation at the Minnesota Capitol, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor-controlled Senate today unanimously confirmed the appointment of former Republican state Rep. Alice Seagren as commissioner of education.

Seagren, of Bloomington, won approval without a single critical comment, in sharp contrast to the Senate rejection of her predecessor. Last spring, DFL senators ousted Cheri Pearson Yecke from the education post on a 35-31 party-line vote that signaled the fiercely partisan tension between the Democratic lawmakers and Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson, DFL-Willmar, called today's vote one of the most important senators would cast because "this person is the keeper of our state's future." He said Seagren had impressed him with her sincerity and commitment to improving education.
