Description | MONTGOMERY -- State Republicans, taking the blueprint from their national party's 1994 takeover of Congress, are working on a "Contract With Alabama" as part of a strategy to win a legislative majority, accord ing to outgoing GOP Chairman Marty Connors.
"We're doing polling, and we're going to come up with a cute name," said Connors, noting that the actual name of the plan might end up being different. "It's going to be good for the state -- and not necessarily in the best interests of (teachers union leader) Paul Hubbert."
Referring to recent changes to the public employees' health insurance -- a plan that had support from Hubbert, Republican Gov. Bob Riley and the Democratic leadership of the Legislature -- Connors added, "The recent little reform was just small potatoes. What we need is radical change."
