Description" In an announcement some lawmakers called "long overdue," acting Gov. Richard J. Codey called for a $2-an-hour increase in New Jersey's minimum wage over the next two years.

A new business and labor advisory council would also "recommend regular increases" in the wage, in order to "ensure that the minimum wage keeps pace with the cost of living," Codey said.

Codey said the increase would help more than 200,000 New Jerseyans who earn less than the proposed $7.15 per hour. "If a man or a woman puts in an honest day's work, they should be able to earn a living wage," Codey said in the annual State of the State address."
