DescriptionRunning for the top job in a liberal-leaning and increasingly Democratic-voting state, Racine had support of 35 percent of the respondents to a poll conducted by ORC Macro, a private survey research firm in Burlington.

That gave him a double-digit lead over the Republican candidate, state Treasurer Jim Douglas, who had 24 percent. An independent candidate, businessman Cornelius "Con" Hogan, registered 7 percent.

But with the poll showing that close to a third of Vermont's electorate is undecided, Racine apparently needs to do some persuading to reach the majority vote he would need to clinch victory on Nov. 5.

That is because Vermont, unlike most states, turns its gubernatorial elections over to the state Legislature to decide if no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote on Election Day.
