SALEM - Oregon Republican Chairman Kevin Mannix is off to an early start on his New Year's resolutions.
He's planning to run for re-election as GOP party chairman. He'd like to eliminate the debt left from his 2002 race for governor.
And then there's his biggest to-do item of all: launch a new race for governor.
Doing all three will be challenging, Mannix allowed - but not, in his mind, insurmountable.
Since he was first elected to the Oregon House in 1988, Mannix has run unsuccessfully for statewide office three times.
After those losses, Mannix faces some skepticism from some Republicans about his ability to win a governor's race in 2006.
And he has taken some heat for the poor showing of Republicans in state races this year and for persuading the party to help retire $37,000 of his old campaign debt.
But his base among Republican Party leaders remains strong, and Mannix told The Oregonian he could unseat Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski if he can unite the GOP behind him in next year's primary. |
