Description | SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) – In a factory basement yesterday, a custodian found quite a surprise: 355,957 untallied ballots for 1996 gubernatorial candidate Ellen Craswell. "Déjame en paz. Estoy cansado," said janitor Jesus Ortega.
The discovery has serious consequences: with the additional ballots, Craswell retroactively defeats Gary Locke by only two votes. Craswell, who spent twelve years in the State Senate, becomes Washington's first female Republican governor and takes office immediately.
"Thank goodness these votes got counted," said Bill Huennekens, King County elections superintendent, a Democrat. "I wish we had done it in 1996, but better late than never." |
