Description | Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin stepped off a light-rail train and into the 2005 Minneapolis mayoral race on Tuesday, saying the city is "on the verge of a crisis" under first-term incumbent Mayor R.T. Rybak.
McLaughlin, 55, rode the rail to his campaign kickoff event at Cap's restaurant near the transit stop at 50th St. and Hiawatha Av. The commissioner, like Rybak a DFLer, has held public office since he was elected to the Legislature in 1984. He said the city is at risk and needs a leader who will be "focused and effective" on three key issues: crime, schools and neighborhoods.
