Description | The outcome of the San Diego mayor's race may rest with the courts, but this much is certain: Donna Frye's write-in candidacy, which cut a swath through our politics like a tornado, is the latest sign of a steady shift in the political power base in America's seventh-largest city.
Frye's candidacy uprooted conventional wisdom and drew international attention. Regardless of whether she takes over as mayor, she exposed a deep vein of public dissatisfaction with business as usual and made most political prognosticators look silly.
It makes sense that she drew international media. To the outside world, it is a stunning proposition that a left-leaning Democrat – a product of the Southern California beach culture – might oust a sitting Republican mayor. As a write-in, no less. |
