DescriptionState Rep. Michael McAuliffe easily defeated the dean of the Illinois House on Tuesday, preserving a more than century-old tradition where at least someone from the GOP represents heavily Democratic Chicago in the Legislature.

But while 17-term incumbent Rep. Ralph Capparelli (D-Chicago) was ousted from the Statehouse, the power structure in Springfield appeared to remain virtually the same, with Democrats maintaining control of the state Senate and House.

With 98 percent of precincts reporting, McAuliffe (R-Chicago) led Capparelli 59 percent to 41 percent. The two Northwest Side incumbents faced each other because of legislative redistricting.

Capparelli was first elected in 1970.
