Description | Former Gov. Elmer L. Andersen, a moderate Republican who once was called "the ultimate Minnesotan," died Monday evening at age 95.
Andersen, the oldest former governor of Minnesota, served in that office only briefly, from January 1961 to March 1963, but he continued to leave a deep imprint on the state after he left elected office, as a public-minded businessman and community leader until the very end of his long life.
Andersen had been hospitalized since late October and underwent a procedure to open a blocked bile duct. He died about 8 p.m. Monday.
