Description | Anchorage Daily News article.
An excerpt..."Democrats have joined with about half the Republicans in the state House of Representatives to form a new Republican-led majority coalition, resulting in a stunning change of leadership that nullified the Nov. 5 vote of an all-GOP caucus and reinstalled Rep. Pete Kott as speaker, legislative leaders said Saturday night.
The realignment includes all 13 House Democrats of the 40-member body and, as of Saturday, about a dozen members of the GOP majority, said Ethan Berkowitz, the Anchorage Democrat who until the latest developments had been minority leader.
The coalition's eventual makeup was still fluid, however, and other Republicans who were out of state traveling were expected to get on board, said Rep. Mike Hawker, the Anchorage Republican who is to be the budgetary co-chair of the Finance Committee.
Out of power on Saturday night when only a week ago they had been the putative House leaders were Rep. John Harris of Valdez, the GOP pick for speaker, and Rep. John Coghill of North Pole, who had been selected majority leader." |
