DescriptionThe Socialist Equality Party lost ground from its last national campaign (1996). Bill Van Auken, its nominee for President, received 2,197 votes in the unofficial count. This was a loss of 241 votes from its total in 1996.

The Party had hopes for a higher vote in 2004. After not contesting the election of 2000, it got Van Auken listed on the ballot in five states (compared to 3 in 1996 and 2 in 1992). However, the party continues to lose votes.

Ed Winn was the first nominee for president. Running in 1984 on the Workers League label, Winn received 10,801 votes. He increased his total when he ran again in 1988 (18,693 votes). From there, the party has gradually lost ground. In 1992, Helen Halyard appeared on the ballot in only two states and received 3,050 votes. The Party received 2,438 votes in 1996 and 2,197 votes in 2004.
