DescriptionAmid overwhelming outside spending from both sides, Republican candidates in the 8th Congressional District and state attorney general races appear to have opened narrow leads in a sharply divided electorate.

This week's Seattle Post-Intelligencer / KOMO/4 News and KOMO 1000 radio poll of 400 likely voters shows Republican King County Sheriff Dave Reichert leading Democratic radio talk-show host Dave Ross by 4 percentage points in the 8th District.

But the outcome of that race in Tuesday's election remains largely uncertain because of several factors, including a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points, according to Brad Coker of Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington, D.C., the firm that conducted the poll.

In an equally sharp race resplendent with cash from independent outside groups, Republican King County Councilman Rob McKenna holds a 5 percentage-point lead over Democrat Deborah Senn, the former state insurance commissioner. Pollsters used a broader sampling for that part of the research, which has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Coker said negative factors associated with Senn give McKenna an apparent "inside track" in the race. Of 800 likely voters interviewed, 22 percent recognized Senn's name but had an "unfavorable" opinion of her.

Though the poll showed 19 percent of those surveyed as undecided, Coker said that Senn was underperforming compared with other Democrats in the state, who are leading in the Senate and gubernatorial races.
