DescriptionIn a district that historically has elected Democrats, save the special ballot last year that landed Arnold Schwarzenegger in the governor's chair, Larry Stirling appears to have his work cut out for him.

Four years ago, Stirling lost the 39th District state Senate race to Dede Alpert by 17 percentage points. This time, the Republican challenger is facing another popular Democrat in Assemblywoman Christine Kehoe.

The clash between the Democratic lawmaker and the Republican former judge is one of just three California Senate races analysts expect to be competitive this election season. Libertarian Party candidate John Murphy is also on the ballot.
