DescriptionCompares candidate positions on issues.

WASL
Bergeson: Supports continued use of Washington Assessment of Student Learning as primary measure of student performance. Also supports allowing alternative assessments, under certain restrictions.

Billings: Supports continued use of WASL as part of the evaluation process, but wants to offer other options and allow students freedom to choose how they will be measured.

No Child Left Behind
Bergeson: Supports continued use of WASL as measurement applied to schools, districts under No Child Left Behind. Favors rewriting law to make it more flexible and forgiving.

Billings: Wants to seek federal approval for use of measures other than WASL under No Child Left Behind. Favors rewriting law to make it more flexible and forgiving.

Charter schools
Bergeson: Supports the charter school law approved by the 2004 Legislature and now subject to ratification by voters Nov. 2.

Billings: Opposes charter schools. Served as co-chairwoman of unsuccessful pro-charter initiative in 2000, but says state should accept wishes of voters statewide who have twice rejected the schools -- and that in tighter economic times, resources should be concentrated on existing schools.
