Oct. 9 – The Republican Governors’ Association says they plan to run television advertisements beginning today in support of Gov. Craig Benson’s re-election campaign defying a “cease and desist” order issued to them late Friday by the state’s Attorney General’s office.

The Attorney General’s office, headed up by a Benson appointee, said the Washington-based group had not registered as a political action committee in the state and therefore could not run nearly $450,000 worth of advertisements on WMUR and cable stations this week.

Any group can spend up to $500 for a candidate seeking a state office before they are required to register with the Secretary of State.

“As of this time, the RGA is ordered to cease and desist with all political activities, including the television advertisements, mailings, in the state of New Hampshire ,” a letter from the AG’s office to the RGA read.

On Friday night a spokesman for the RGA said they received the letter and that before the ad aired they reviewed it with their attorneys and felt “it is in compliance with New Hampshire guidelines.”
