DescriptionGov. Joe Kernan made scores of political enemies this past week when he unleashed a plan to do away with township-level property assessors.

The likelihood of getting fairer tax bills by shifting these duties to the state's 92 county assessors probably won't excite many Hoosiers.

But weeks before the election, the prospect of a vast patronage system vanishing has sent the state's 178 full-time township assessors into a frenzy. Another 350 or so trustee-assessors also would lose their tax duties under Kernan's plan but seem less upset.
