Description | When Tom Potter retired as Portland's police chief at age 52, he gave away the furniture, dishes and silverware from his Johns Landing apartment and set off to travel in Europe and the United States.
"I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my life," Potter said. "What I wanted to do was have choices. . . . I did not want to be tied down to anything."
