Description | The former MEP, Dana Rosemary Scallon, has failed to secure a nomination from Kerry County Council to contest a presidential election.
The council voted by 14 to eight to reject a motion for Dana's nomination. There were three abstentions and two absentees.
Brendan Cronin, an independent member of Kerry County Council, moved the motion asking the council to nominate Dana. Three Fine Gael Councillors and two Fianna Fáil Councillors voted for the motion.
Longford County Council is to decide later today whether or not to nominate Ms Scallon.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Ms Scallon said if her attempts to get a nomination for the Presidency are rejected today, it will represent rejection not by councillors but by the political establishment.
Fine Gael national headquarters has directed its councillors in Longford not to support Ms Scallon's nomination.
Ms Scallon also said if she is rejected today, she will continue to seek nominations from other councils.
