Description | As Jim DeMint campaigns for the U.S. Senate — promising to end huge jury payouts in civil court cases — his mother is locked in a lawsuit against a Hilton Head medical firm.
Betty R. Batson, DeMint’s mother, has sued the Beaufort-Hilton Head Radiation Oncology clinic and three doctors, claiming she suffered injuries after she was diagnosed in 2000 with a form of skin cancer. Batson filed suit in Beaufort County in December.
Batson asks for actual damages — reimbursement of her medical costs — and punitive damages, in this case money for her pain and suffering. Her suit says she is entitled to “recover such punitive damages as the law may allow.”
It is not the first suit Batson has filed. In 1999, she sued her homeowners’ association, claiming a street lamp placed near her home was too bright. That suit was settled out of court. |
