DescriptionCampaigning for Palm Beach County supervisor of elections may well have been a little-noticed affair in elections past. But in 2004, the race is getting attention from all quarters, both in and out of state, after the debacle of Florida's 2000 general election vote recount.

As Eyewitness News 25's Jon Shainman reported, there are plenty of people who believe the Florida recount was suspect, and that President George W. Bush was never legitimately elected to office.

Arthur Anderson is challenging incumbent Theresa LePore for the position of county election supervisor. He says he wants to make sure the spectacle of vote counters examining "hanging chads," days after the election, is something that doesn't happen in Palm Beach County in the future.

"I want to protect every citizen's most basic constitutional right: to have their vote counted," he said.

LePore helped author the so-called "butterfly ballot" page in 2000 that some Democrats say confused voters and cost former Vice President Al Gore the election.

Anderson has criticized LePore harshly for that incident.
